VIRTUAL PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
(ARCHIVE)

1 AUGUST - 1 OCTOBER 2020

The mirage of the everyday has disappeared.

MIRAGES was a virtual exhibition featuring works from 13 emerging photographic artists from Melbourne. The works on display were distinctive in their stylistic, thematic and formal approaches – bound together by the shared experience of navigating a perpetually unstable, deeply unfamiliar societal atmosphere.

The exhibition presented series from the artists that were created or collated in response to a radically new landscape, carved out by the seismic pressures of the prior seven months. A global pandemic, widespread socio-political unrest, and the reckoning with prevailing symbolic orders gestured toward the need for new ways of seeing and being in the world.

The works exhibited engaged with and developed diverse approaches in photographic form, practice, and modes of rendering spaces, subjects, and the self in response to the new landscape. Through the lenses of these artists, internal and perceptive worlds were documented, refracted, overlaid, and reimagined with intrigue, nostalgia, and a hint of the uncanny.

MIRAGES was the first exhibition hosted by ULTRAMARINE COLLECTIVE, curated by Luqman Aly and Marcus Mason.
